SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs and Halifax Mooseheads met for the first time in the 2012-13 season in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night. The Mooseheads took the contest 4-3 in front of 4,672 fans at Harbour Station.
Jurij Repe and Olivier LeBlanc scored their first QMJHL goals and Jonathan Huberdeau added another for the Sea Dogs. Marcus Cuomo assisted on LeBlanc’s goal for his first QMJHL point as Sebastien Auger made 43 saves on 47 shots in the loss.
Jonathan Drouin, Martin Frk, Andrew Ryan and Brent Andrews tallied for the Mooseheads while Chris Clarke made 31 saves on 34 shots in the victory.
Auger started the night on a good note, stopping Frk on a shorthanded breakaway.
Huberdeau made a series of brilliant moves to break into the Mooseheads zone, gaining an excellent scoring chance and drawing a penalty in the process.
On the ensuing power play, Repe took a great feed from Huberdeau at the right side of the net, blasting home his first QMJHL goal at 8:19 of the first.
With 10 seconds remaining in the period, Drouin cut into the zone and backhanded a shot on Auger who flashed the pad, robbing the Mooseheads forward.
Drouin slid one past Auger 13 seconds into the middle frame to tie the game.
Auger made another great save on Luca Ciampini using the pads, which led to a Sea Dogs two-on-one with Stephen Anderson and Oliver Cooper, but Clarke stood tall.
Huberdeau somehow found a hole to score when Clarke left the puck behind the net. Huberdeau picked up the puck and backhanded it into the net for his sixth of the year unassisted at 5:51.
Auger stepped up big in the first 30 seconds of a Mooseheads 5-on-3 including a miraculous pad save with the left leg, stretching across to rob Drouin.
A few moments later however, the Mooseheads converted on a Frk point shot at 16:12.
LeBlanc took a feed at the point and blasted home a point shot for his first goal in the QMJHL at . Cuomo’s assist on the play was also his first QMJHL point. Andreas Tsogkas notched the other assist on the play.
The lead didn’t last long as Ryan tied the game back up at three apiece at 4:27.
Just under nine minutes into the third period, a streaking Nathan MacKinnon blew into the offensive zone, made an impressive more, but couldn’t beat a sprawling Auger.
Huberdeau and Frk mixed it up, giving Huberdeau his second career Gordie Howe Hat-trick with a goal, an assist and a fight.
Andrews netted a short-handed marker at 14:06 to round out the socring.
