HOFFMAN NETS HAT TRICK AS SEA DOGS DEFEAT REMPARTS 6-4

The league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs turned in yet another outstanding performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Quebec Remparts by a score of 6-4 at Harbour Station to capture their 17th straight victory and move eight points ahead of any team in the entire QMJHL.

Saint John’s #1 line of Mike Hoffman, Stanislav Galiev, and Nick Petersen put on a clinic in offensive production versus Quebec, combining for ten points on the day while wowing the 4,710 spectators in attendance by turning in one sensational shift after another.

Hoffman led the way with three goals and one helper, while Petersen recorded 2G-2A-4P and Galiev dished out a pair of highlight-reel assists. Vancouver Canucks prospect Steven Anthony also scored for the Sea Dogs, who improve to 25-4-1-0 with the impressive home win.

Marc-Olivier Vallerand, Mikhail Stefanovich, Mikael Tam, and Ryan Bourque, meanwhile, all tallied markers for the Remparts in a losing effort.

Between the pipes, Marc-Antoine Gélinas registered his league-best 17th win of the year for the home side, making 21 saves on the afternoon. At the other end of the ice, Peter Delmas fell to 9-5 after surrendering five goals on 44 shots faced during a busy afternoon for the veteran net minder.

The Remparts’ league-leading power play unit converted on an early two-man advantage to open the scoring on Sunday, with Belarusian winger Mikhail Stefanovich netting his eighth goal of the year in the fourth minute of play.

Saint John responded four minutes later when star winger Nick Petersen hit his line-mate Mike Hoffman with a picture-perfect cross-ice feed on an odd-man rush into Remparts territory; the veteran sniper promptly blasted a one-timer to the back of Quebec’s net to improve his 2009-10 goals total to 15.

Third-year forward Steven Anthony gave the hosts their first lead of the day at the 8:07 mark of the opening frame, banging home a rebound produced by a Mike Hoffman point shot to make the 14th offensive strike of his season of the man-up variety.

Quebec tied the match up at two apiece 13:25 into the second period when Mikael Tam finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play by tapping home his seventh of the year. Ryan Bourque and Mikhail Stefanovich both registered assists on the power play goal.

A sensational individual effort by Stanislav Galiev restored Saint John’s one-goal advantage fifty seconds later. The import winger stole the puck from a Remparts defenseman deep in the visitors’ zone and managed to spot Nick Petersen lurking near Quebec’s net. Galiev somehow managed to hit the Pittsburgh Penguins prospect with an incredible behind-the-back pass as he fell to the ice and Petersen wasted little time in depositing the puck across the Remparts’ goal line, picking up the 15th goal of his overage season in the process.

Off of the subsequent face-off, Galiev sprung Mike Hoffman in on a semi-breakaway with an expertly-delivered bank pass. Approaching a speed near mach three, Hoffman burst through Quebec’s zone with the puck, around a defender, and skilfully beat Delmas on a nifty backhand shot to tally his second marker of the match.

Marc-Antoine Gélinas came up with a huge stop a moment later, stacking his pads to deny Jonathan Audy-Marchessault of a breakaway goal and send Sunday’s contest into the second intermission with the Sea Dogs in possession of a 4-2 lead.

Active Image

A high, glove-hand shot off the stick of Marc-Olivier Vallerand pulled Quebec back to within immediate striking distance of their opponents 7:04 into the third period, but Mike Hoffman quickly put the Sea Dogs back on top by two 1:45 later on a rocket of a snap shot from the left side of the slot that gave the Ottawa Senators prospect his second hat trick of the year.

Active Image

The frantic back-and-forth action continued in the subsequent minute when New York Rangers prospect Ryan Bourque finished off a three-on-one rush by netting his twelfth of the year, once again reducing the visitors’ deficit to a single goal. That would be as close as Quebec would get however, as Nick Petersen scored into an empty net with 29 seconds remaining in regulation to give his team the 6-4 decision.

Up next for the Port City’s major junior squad is a Wednesday night road game versus the P.E.I. Rocket. The puck drops at 7pm as Saint John looks to kick off their December schedule with a victory against their divisional rivals.
